Fifth Grade Lessons

During the school year I will be visiting with fifth grade classrooms to introduce and cover a variety of topics. All guidance lessons are presented in accordance with our Character Education Program and/or along the guidelines of the Virginia Standards for School Counseling Programs.

  • Mnemonics (the “science” of memorizing) and how to increase both long term and short term memory. The students will review some basic examples of mnemonics, learn the rules for writing their own, and practice making a few of their own
  • Learning Styles - we will discuss the three basic styles of learning (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic). Students will predict what their style is, complete a learning styles inventory to gain some insight into their style, and identify ways to enhance their learning by using their own styles
  • Goal Setting - The Key to Success- discussion will include the importance of setting goals, the difference between long term and short term goals, suggestions for achieving goals, and each student will develop 3 personal goals. Students then will brainstorm ways to achieve their goals, which may include their previously identified learning style. (A big thank you to Norvac Lock and Key Company who provide our students with some interesting keys as a symbol of success!)

Please feel free to call me if you have any questions about our lessons.
